Brazil’s gymnastics sweetheart Jade Barbosa suffered a heartbreaking exit from the women’s all-around final, leaving the competition in a wheelchair after a painful fall during the floor exercise.
However, on her second pass she made another troubled landing, appearing to damage her left ankle, and immediately stopped, a look of distress on her face.
Worried team officials rushed to her aid as she was helped into a wheelchair and pushed backstage, while the sympathetic crowd struck up a rousing chant of “Bra-zil.”
Barbosa is no stranger to injury. She was hurt after the 2008 Olympics, and it looked at the time as if her career might have been over. She injured her right hand, and according to Triple Full's translation of a Globoesporte article, her doctors had reportedly concluded that her injury could be treated, but not cured entirely.
In 2013, she ruptured a ligament in her leg while training. But her career continued, as she competed with her teammates in the Pan American Games in 2015 before ultimately making it to the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Barbosa, who was not expected to challenge for a medal, landed awkwardly on her knees during her first tumbling pass in Thursday’s second rotation. While wincing in pain, she gamely tried to continue.
